Welcome to my Classroom
Melinda L. Christian (8th grade Science)
I am teaching 8th grade science for the 11th year at Owen Middle School. I have taught middle school science and/or math for over 15 years. Before moving to Swannanoa in 2004, I taught in Richmond and outside Charlottesville, VA.
I graduated from Agnes Scott College in Decatur, GA with a major in biology. I received a Masters Degree in Christian Education from the Presbyterian School of Christian Education in Richmond, VA. In 2010, I received National Board Certification in early adolescent science, and in 2011, AIG endorsement. In addition to teaching, I have also served as a Director of Christian Education in several churches, and I worked for many years as a microbiologist for the State of Virginia.
My husband, Bill, is a Presbyterian minister and a pastoral counselor. Our older son, Jack, is an assistant professor of English and Creative Writing at Westfield State University in MA. His wife, Liane is completing her Ph.D .in English at UMass. They have a beautiful daughter, Lucinda, who was born in April, 2014, and whom I can't see enough of! Our younger son, Warren, is working at UNC-Chapel Hill as the ESL specialist in their writing center. His wife, Sarah is assistant professor at Duke and at the VA hospital in clinical psychology.
Having grown up in Tampa, FL, I love now living in the mountains. I enjoy hiking, lake kayaking, bicycling, and reading.
Teaching science suits me very well, as I really want students to understand and appreciate the natural world around them. The future of the Earth depends on them!
