Drakeford, Susan --ELA/Social Studies (7th)

I am very excited to join the wonderful staff and community at Owen Middle School. This will be my 19th year of teaching! I began working in Buncombe County Schools as a Title I Reading teacher at Johnston Elementary School and then moved into a full time position teaching at Enka Middle School where I taught English Language Arts and Social Studies for eight years. For the past two years I combined my love of teaching in a traditional classroom with experiential education! I worked as the Educators Initiative Program Manager at the North Carolina Outward Bound School. The Educators Initiative is a yearlong professional development program for classroom teachers which emphasizes classroom community, curriculum development and professional leadership, while building a collaborative network of educators committed to innovative experiential teaching and learning. Coming to Owen Middle School is a perfect fit for me because this school also values innovative experiential teaching and learning!

I have a Bachelor of Arts in Physical Education and Health and a master’s degree from Western Carolina University in Middle Grades Language Arts. In addition to teaching English Language Arts and Social Studies for 8 years at Enka Middle School I have also taught Physical Education and Health (grades 6-8) at Exploris Middle School in downtown Raleigh. I have worked as an instructor and course director for the North Carolina Outward Bound School. I love the outdoors, hiking, trail running, backpacking and sea kayaking, sailing, reading and yoga.

The following quotes are representative of my philosophy of education:

" I regard it as the foremost task of education to ensure the survival of these qualities: an enterprising curiosity, an undefeatable spirit, tenacity in pursuit, readiness for sensible self-denial and above all, compassion"
~ Kurt Hahn

"The goal is not to turn you into something other than yourself, but to activate you to your highest potential".
~Gary Kraftsow
