Hi! I am the visual arts teacher for 6th, 7th, and 8th grade here at Owen Middle School. I was born and raised in the beautiful Appalachian Mountains of North Carolina.

I have been teaching art for twenty years and I am amazed at how quickly those years have gone by. I graduated from Western Carolina University with a BS.Of Ed.in Art in 1996. I taught art to grades Kindergarten through eighth in Wilkes County, North Carolina for six years. After which, I have had the privilege of teaching art in the Swannanoa Valley at OMS since 2002.I am a very busy married mother of two wonderful daughters. I love teaching art and I believe that art is an essential part of every child's overall education. Because I believe that visual arts is interconnected to math, science, language arts, social studies, and basically all areas of study, I practice an integrative approach to teaching.

Class Overview

6th Grade Art:
Sixth grade art is an eighteen-week introductory course. Emphasis is placed on strengthening the students basic skills through exploring a variety of materials and techniques. Math concepts such as symmetry are explored as well as a Medieval themed art unit which correlates with 6th grade Social Studies.

7th and 8th Grade Art:
Seventh and Eighth Grade art courses are eighteen-week, semester long classes. In 7th grade art, students continue to develop artistic skills. In conjunction with their Social Studies curriculum we engage in a unit of study inspired by African Art which includes the creation of African design mask making, pottery, metal etching and more. Eighth grade art students, while still continuing to strengthen their artistic skills, focus more on developing an understanding of and appreciation for art. Also, emphasis is placed on the development of their personal style and individuality as an artist.
