Cortney Pauly, M.S., CCC-SLP
Owen High School and Owen Middle School
My passion is to help students improve their communication so that they can access the curriculum at school and have successful interactions with teachers and peers. Speech therapy encompasses 5 areas of communication: articulation (speech sounds like 'r' and 'sh'), language (spoken vocabulary and grammar), fluency (stuttering), voice, and social and pragmatic communication skills (using language to connect with other people).
My background is in linguistics -- the science of language. My first career was researching the languages of tribal groups in northern Thailand. During my 5 years working in Thailand, I learned to speak/read/write Thai fluently, fell in love with Thai food, and trekked throughout Thailand and 7 other countries in Asia -- what an adventure!
When I returned to the US in 2009, I looked for a career that involved languages and helping people, and was drawn to Speech Language Pathology. I studied at Western Carolina University and graduated in May 2013.
I live in Black Mountain with my husband and 2 daughters (ages 4 and 1). I work part-time (20 hours a week). Here's my schedule:
Mondays 7:45-3:15 at Owen Middle
Wednesdays 7:45-3:15 at Owen Middle
Thursdays 9-2 at Owen High
Please contact me if you have any questions about your child's communication. I look forward to working with a great group of teachers and students this year!
