It's hard to believe that a new school year has started. I'm sure you have been very busy getting your family back into the routine of school. I am very glad to have your child in my classroom and would like to take this opportunity to welcome your family to the Owen Middle School family.

At-Home Reading Program
The foundation of my Language Arts curriculum is reading. As you know, reading is a skill that must be practiced. No matter what the student's level of reading proficiency might be, it can always be improved.

Starting next week, your child will begin my At-Home Reading program. The objective of this program is to give the student an opportunity to choose reading material he or she is interested in. Expect your child to read regularly each night for at least thirty minutes. The student may choose to read a novel, a magazine article, newspaper article, graphic novel, or internet article. To enhance the quality of this reading experience, the student should talk with a parent or other caregiver about his or her reading.

In addition to talking about the reading, the students will respond to a variety of Reader's Response questions. These responses will be given to students on alternating weeks. They will be printed on the backs of the Reading Logs. These Reader’s Responses are an important part of the literary experience. They will be used to determine the depth to which your child is grasping the elements of literature. Because of their importance, Reader’s Responses must be turned in on time; I do not accept them late.

Each student is required to complete a book project per grading period. Various genres of literature will be assigned for these projects. More will come home about these projects later.

Starting next week, your child will begin my At-Home Reading program. The objective of this program is to give the student an opportunity to choose reading material he or she is interested in. Expect your child to read regularly each night for at least twenty minutes. The student may choose to read a novel, a magazine article, newspaper article, graphic novel, or internet article. To enhance the quality of this reading experience, the student should talk with a parent or other caregiver about his or her reading, the caregiver should make a comment on the Reading Log, and sign it on Thursday nights. On alternating weeks your child will answer a Reader’s Response about his or her nightly reading. These responses will be done on the back of the reading logs.

Each student is required to complete a book project each grading period. Various genres of literature will be assigned for these projects. More will come home about these projects later.

Writing
Your child will use a spiral notebook to work on writing skills. This Language/Writing journal will be used for editing and grammar practice, Literary Elements, parts-of-speech, and specialized literary vocabulary. In addition, your student will maintain a writing folder that contains samples of several different types of writing we will work on this year.

Spelling and Vocabulary
Beginning next week, we will begin alternating lessons
