3D Cell Model Project: 7th Grade Science
Name______________________________________ _______________ Due Date: January 9, 2017
PURPOSE: Students will demonstrate an understanding of eukaryotic cells and the names and functions of organelles found in eukaryotic cells.
- Select a Eukaryotic cell type. Choose a plant or animal cell.
- Study the organelles of your cell type.
- Library sources, your textbook (pages 358-366), and website provided may be of assistance.
- Webpage: www.cellsalive.com (Links to an external site.), or explorelearning.com > Cell Structure Gizmo
- Remember: plant cells are typically “little rooms” and animal cells are usually more round.
- Create a 3D model to represent the structural components of your cell type- either plant or animal. Remember to keep the sizes of the organelles in proportion to the overall size of the cell.
- Options for materials to be used for this model are endless. Examples: pasta, foam, clay, drink boxes, recycled stuff, shoe boxes, Jell-O, candy, cakes, etc.
- Remember the rubric: easy to understand, neat in appearance, etc. Select materials wisely.
- Materials should “resemble” the organelles when possible.
- Include the following components in your project (choose animal or plant cell):
Animal cell needs these organelles:

A complete project will have all of the following to turn in:
- Create/build 3D model.
- Create a key or labeling technique to identify the parts of the cell.
- Create a chart or table that includes the name and function of each identified organelle.
Extra Credit Options: Add the following components to either cell project for extra credit: nucleolus, chromatin, vesicles, centrioles and others discussed in class. (5 points possible)
Have Fun!

Accurate: All correct organelles are included for animal or plant cell, and are proportional and in the right location..
|
All 10-11 cell organelles are found, are proportional and correctly located.
100.0 pts

Only one or two organelles missing/incorrect, not proportional or misplaced.

Labeling or Key to Identify each organelle easily.
|
All organelles are easily found according to labeling or key.
40.0 pts
|
Labeling or key doesn't identify 1-3 organelles, or they are hard to find.
15.0 pts
|
4-6 organelles could not be found according to key or labeling technique.
8.0 pts
|
More than 6 organelles are not found or difficult to find based on key or labeling.

Functions chart
|
Every organelle is given a clear, primary function (job) within a chart/table (which is not copied and pasted). Functions are put into student's own words and fully describe the function.
40.0 pts
|
1-3 organelles do not show a function (job) on the Functions table/chart, or only tells part of the organelle's primary function.
10.0 pts
|
More than 3 organelles do not show a function (job) on the Functions table/chart.
5.0 pts
|
There are no functions listed on a chart or table, or table is copy and pasted..
