About Your Director

My Name is Jason Plummer

I moved to the Swannanoa Valley when I was 11, at the start of my 6th Grade year.  I attended both Charles D. Owen Middle and High Schools, graduating from high school in 2001.

In my time in the Bands of Owen I participated in multiple All-County and All-District Band Competitions, earned a place in the NC State Honors Band my senior year, and was awarded the John Philip Sousa Award for music.

In the summer between my junior and senior year of high school I marched with the Carolina Crown Drum and Bugle Corps.  We toured 22 of the United States along with Canada, competing all the way to the World Championships outside of Washington, D.C.

I attended Mars Hill College and, later, Mars Hill University earning a bachelor's in Music Education, completing a minor in Psychology, and finishing a Reading Specialist Certification.  While a student I participated in the Wind Ensemble, Brass Quintet, Trumpet Ensemble, Jazz Band, Marching Band, Percussion Ensemble, and was in a gigging funk band called TriTone.

After graduation I taught for one year at Davidson River School as a Taiko (Japanese Drum) instructor while also working at a music sales and repair store.  Being a musician and having visited Japan, this was a great fit for me.  The store, unfortunately, did not survive the economic crash of 2008 and I was forced to look for work elsewhere.

Next I became the Director of Bands at Rugby Middle School in Hendersonville where I taught for 8 years.  Our program at its height was around 220 students across three grade levels.  We participated in many competitions for individual and group performance in both classical and jazz styles and enjoyed a good deal of success.  Our jazz band received multiple offers to be paid performers at local restaurants in the area.

Now I am back in the Swannanoa Valley, working under a fantastic administration and partnering with Tyson Hamrick, a band director I look up to and respect in many ways.  I am happy to be here and am ready to offer my best.
