I am Madeleine Toerne, the newest 7th grade ELA teacher. I hail from Toledo, Ohio, but have lived in Asheville since June. Before coming to work at OMS, I worked at a resort in Wyoming, waited tables and substitute taught in Michigan, and worked as an interpretive park guide for the Blue Ridge Parkway. I enjoy reading, writing, hiking, biking, eating, discussing, walking, playing guitar, singing, organizing, cooking, exploring, and spending time with loved ones.

I'm looking forward to getting to know you and your student throughout the rest of the year. I have a lot of exciting plans created to help students sharpen their writing, reading, and critical thinking skills. This spring we will be:

1. Writing "This I Believe" personal essays
2. Studying famous poets and creating our own poetry portfolios
3. Reading short novels
4. Writing and reading about the outdoors
5. Preparing for the EOG!

You can contact me via e-mail at
My planning period is 11:45-1:15 if you need to schedule an in-person or phone meeting.
