Buncombe County Schools math educators are adding up awards after being honored by the North Carolina Council of Teachers of Mathematics (NCCTM).

Lead Elementary and Intermediate Math Coach Meg McKee received the prestigious Dr. Lee Stiff Instructional Leader of Mathematics Teaching Award. She’s served students and teachers in the Buncombe County Schools system for more than three decades.

“The purpose of the Dr. Lee Stiff Instructional Leader of Mathematics Teaching Award is to recognize and reward an individual at the district level who has made an outstanding and noteworthy contribution to mathematics education,” said Monica Ponder, BCS Director of Elementary and Secondary Education. “Meg's leadership is instrumental in carrying out a strong vision for the teaching of mathematics and improving student learning throughout Buncombe County Schools.”

NCCTM also honored Jennifer Gortney of Fairview Elementary as the BCS Mathematics Teacher of the Year, and Owen Middle School’s James Michael Sapp for coaching student math competition teams.
