🥾🌿 Students from Charles D. Owen Middle School (CDOMS) set out on an unforgettable adventure last week, trekking to Catawba Falls while forging friendships, conquering obstacles, and immersing themselves in the natural beauty of Western North Carolina.
Ten students, accompanied by school staff and expert guides from Waypoint Adventure, embraced the crisp morning air as they hiked through the forest, sharing laughter and excitement along the way. They snapped selfies at the lower falls, lent each other a hand over tricky stream crossings, and stood in awe of the towering riverbanks. Along the route, they also witnessed the lasting effects of Hurricane Helene, spotting landslide scars that served as a powerful reminder of nature’s strength and resilience.
“It’s really important for our students to be exposed to nature; it’s the best part of living here,” said CDOMS extended content assistant Tracy Derreberry. “We’re working with Waypoint to make sure everyone gets the chance to enjoy it, so we’re bringing a mix of students of all abilities.”
Waypoint Adventure specializes in making the outdoors accessible for all, offering life-changing experiences like hiking, camping, and kayaking for individuals with disabilities. Through adaptive equipment and tailored support, the organization ensures that every adventurer, regardless of ability, can safely explore the great outdoors.
“We believe everyone has the dignity to challenge themselves and take a risk,” said Waypoint program coordinator Theresa Scott. “And we want to make sure that that opportunity is afforded to everyone. Because when you challenge yourself is when you grow and learn more about yourself.”
As they returned to school with muddy boots and bright smiles, the students carried with them memories and a newfound confidence in themselves and each other.
