At Charles D. Owen Middle School’s Summer Reading Academy, students kept their brains and bodies active. Students dove into stories that  built their reading skills, and brought their learning to life through hands-on art and STEM projects.

Throughout the academy, students have explored texts that spark imagination and curiosity. But what makes this program special is how students are encouraged to apply what they’ve read in meaningful and exciting ways. Whether it’s engineering a project inspired by a character's journey or creating a visual art based on settings and themes, students are discovering new ways to connect with literature.

One day might involve designing and building a habit that reflects the material learned in science about predator and prey relationships. The next day could include painting and constructing a predator and prey costume out of recycled materials. The blend of reading, STEM, Art, and science help students retain information, express creativity, and develop a love for learning that goes beyond the classroom.

Summer Reading Academy across Buncombe County Schools is more than just a chance to boost literacy - it’s an opportunity for students to grow as critical thinkers, creators, and collaborators. As summer continues, so does the adventure - one book, one brushstroke, and one brainstorm at a time.
