🌲🌲🌲 In Charles D. Owen Middle School’s Comprehensive Support Classroom, students and their peer buddies took part in a special project this holiday season.
Together, they recycled decades worth of old Christmas cards by cutting and collaging them together into new designs with personal notes. They delivered the cards to Mountain Ridge Health and Rehabilitation, bringing good cheer to everyone at the facility. The experience taught everyone involved about the history of Christmas cards, and it encouraged friendship among students from all different backgrounds.
“These peer groups make connections throughout the school,” said Extended Content teacher Katherine Capps. “Our goal is to help every student be the most successful version of themself. This helps our kids grow their confidence and have fun with kids their own age.”
Harper, Peyton, and Lily are grade-level peer buddies who volunteered to help with the Christmas card project, and they plan to assist with the Special Olympics this spring.
“I think it’s really cool to come help,” said Peyton, one of the peer buddies. “I’ve always wanted to meet the kids and say ‘hi’ to them and get to know them. So now we’re working together, and that’s cool.”
